Marta was born in communist Cuba, where she learned the value of hard work, faith, and resilience at a young age. Her father was a pastor,
and her mother—his devoted partner—instilled in Marta a love for learning and service. Despite growing up amid hardship, Marta’s experiences
fortified her character and prepared her to lead with strength, compassion, and conviction.
An immigrant who arrived in Miami during the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, Marta proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1990. Her journey exemplifies the American
dream—one marked by perseverance, service, and achievement. In recognition of her contributions as a community leader and successful
immigrant, Marta received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, one of the nation’s most prestigious awards.
