Beauty of Sight , formerly known as Florida Lions Eye Bank , was founded in 1962 as a cooperative effort between the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Lions Clubs of Florida . Created to recover and distribute eye tissue for sight - saving transplant surgery , today we do so much more , including processing tissue for specialized specific layer corneal transplants , preparing personalized serum eye drops for patients throughout Florida , operating the only dedicated ocular pathology lab in the state , and spearheading innovative ophthalmic research .
To continue our commitment to delivering the highest quality ophthalmic services and pioneering groundbreaking research , we are constructing a new facility just two blocks from our home . Plans for the facility include world - class GMP laboratories and processing rooms , a state - of - the - art education and training center , and a dedicated research space . Our new home will allow us to expand our programs dedicated to restoring sight and accelerate our research on developing new treatments and cures for ophthalmic diseases .
